“Dad said that it was a very eerie day from the beginning, but everything got worse when night fell. Mom knew that I would be born at any time, but it couldn't have happened in a worse date. There was a terrible storm on that day, the strongest dad could recall in a really long time, and we lived in a flimsy house in the middle of nowhere, far away from everything, so when mom felt that it was due, they didn't know what to do. The roads leading to the town ran along the river, which would often flood during intense rain and block the way entirely. Dad didn't want to risk going all the way out through the mud, the hills and the fog to possibly get caught in a flood and have to drive all the way back, so what they could do was try a home birth. Mom had been sick for days and was very weak, and I imagine a baby parasitizing her insides was definitely not helping it at all.
“Dad told me that my birth was too difficult. As if it wasn't bad enough that water was leaking in everywhere through the roof, mom bled a lot all through labor and they didn't know what to do to stop it. Among a river of blood and tears, I was born, but mom did not resist the blood loss and her heart stopped beating. Dad tried all he could, but in the end, it wasn't enough to save her. The rain continued stronger than ever, and dad held me in the sorrowful darkness of the bedroom, lit only by the eventual lightning strikes in the distance.
“He named me Kevyn, the name mom had chosen. After the storm cleared on the next morning, Dad managed to get support and have me properly checked up. I turned out to be very healthy despite mom's conditions and the circumstances of my birth. He said that after describing the event to the nurses, they said I was lucky not to have died as well that night.
“Bad luck and good luck. It seems that since the very first day of my life, this has been my fate; an eternal roller-coaster of good and bad luck, frustrating and unpredictable."
